Mark Fernald Wentworth was born in Kittery in 1820. He was a local physician who studied at Dartmouth Medical School and also a Union general, having enlisted at the age of 41. He is buried with his wife, Eliza, and their daughter Annie in a private tomb. This tomb is a part of another cemetery, formerly known as “Dame Cemetery,” just off Wentworth Street, in an alley. Members of the Parker family are also buried here. (Courtesy of Kittery Historical and Naval Society.)

General Wentworth was in command of both the 27th Maine Infantry and the 32nd Maine Infantry during the Civil War. He was injured at the Siege of Petersburg in 1864 and resigned his commission after that. He returned to Kittery to live the rest of his days with his family.
